i say me/a then use assassins promise my bad you can try echo empathy or combine with necro for more melee-hate
also i love how everyone picks up on one person's mistake and bash him until his explode instead of ignoring it after one person points out the mistake.

First of all - you're screwed.
If you choose to not believe that - I'd go necro secondary.
3 PvE only skills (if you can waste your GWEN book on the Norn title. Finish Him and You Move Like A Dwarf are VERY sweet even at relatively low levels!) + some curses for things like Enfeebling Blood (possibly SS since there is no elite that would actually be worth it - although Echo could be an option!).
I would actually suggest going Illusion for Clumsiness and Wandering Eye - since Dom isn't going to be worth it with it's long recharges.
Finish off with something like Power Drain.

Upier, I just started using finish him on my warrior (as part of a godmode build because I don't have SY) and I have to say I like it so far. For a mesmer, I can see potential with that skill as well.
You could go /mo for some utility (that's what I did). /n has some nice hexes for you. The mesmer's biggest problem in a lot of pve is a lack of damage output so you might want to consider going /e for some added damge.

I just want a Me/_ that would get me through prophecies with relative ease. If it's really that hard to do it, I guess I can just wait and try to get Factions.

Don't worry then.
Pretty much everything will get you through C1 with relative ease.
The reason why everyone is hooked on AP is because it makes the mesmer perform very sweet rather then just passable.

There's the truth right there.
Secondary Profession? Any caster...just steer clear from Warrior and Ranger secondaries for now, they wont benefit you much.
After that, chuck some skills together, play a bit, amend your build a little, and post back here for some help. You can change your secondary profession later on after all...

First of all - I mean like good PvE skills.
Second of all - if you'd have read my post you'd have seen I suggested the use of illusion over dom if you lack AP since Clumsy/WE are quite decent in that case. Fast recharge and nice PvE effects.

Wow, you're terrible at the game if you think Diversion is a good skill in PvE.
In the time it takes you to cast Diversion, I could probably kill the monk. If it's especially problematic, I'd take a BHA hero, so the monk doesn't even get 1 skill off, whereas Diversion still lets the monk cast that one skill which might heal it up to full health.
Elementalists have a powerful AoE nuke at 2 second recharge-Mesmers have nothing to compare.

1. Diversion is good in dungeons
2. Good point
3. What is that nuke?
@OP: since you have only proph+eotn I would highly suggest pve only skills. Keep away from energy denial skills in pve , they are useless.

nope
maybe in NM but not in HM. Use it on something else if you know its a easy kill.
its not always all about damage sometimes its about taking less damage. Your team will be much ore stable and with just 4 damage dealers you will not take that much longer than the team with 6 damage dealers when it comes to killing every thing. I use to just add as many eles as were available but soon as i hit HM i saw that this tactic was not as effective, and that i needed some form of defense. There are many ways for defense, necros, paras, Hammer wars, i like hammer wars KDs and mesmers interrupts cause if a spell gets interrupted or they are KDed your team takes 0 damage

I think that the problem was you wanting to use eles as damage dealers in HM.
